Since I began serving on the Carrboro Town Council, I have learned so much and I have seen how vital Affordable Housing, Equitable Public Transit and Equitable Representation is to our town. These issues address the core needs of many in our communities who have been underserved by the current systems. On council, I have worked to ensure when decisions are made at that council table, they are a reflection of the entire community. Period. Since Eliazar was sworn in on June 7, 2022, I have dedicated my time on Council to support affordable housing. He has worked with his colleagues and staff to advance projects which will create more housing inventory in town, improve funding for affordable housing nonprofits, and utilize American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding, allocating $500,000.00 to Emergency Housing Assistance and $1,000,000.00 to the Affordable Housing Fund and more. At the same time, supporting funding for organizations like Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness and the Interfaith Council. This is just the beginning. Eliazar will continue to work to support affordable housing, from zoning changes to town ordinances to fund current programs. Making housing affordable should not be our only goal in addressing housing in Carrboro. We must ensure that we use our resources to improve our town so that our communities can live, work, and play in Carrboro. To ensure our town is a home for all members of our community, we have the collective responsibility to engage all faces of our community. Racial Equity and Justice have been at the very core of Eliazar’s service on Council and before he took his seat. Whether the Council was discussing the budget, ARPA funding, town contracts, staff reports, resolutions, and every decision that has come before Council, he has sought to advance our Racial Equity goals. Eliazar was an organizer before he joined the Council and will continue to be an organizer as he forges ahead in his public service. “I have stood up for equity and justice, both literally and figuratively, from the very moment I took my Oath of Office. The town must expand and ensure equitable access to bus routes, bike lanes, walkways and greenways to ensure all our community can interact with our town in a safe and secure way. Carrboro’s parks, downtown, businesses and restaurants are wonderful places and ways our community can engage with the town and each other, yet not all of our communities have equitable and safe access. As we move forward and grow we must invest in areas with limited or unsafe connectivity to all our Carrboro has to offer. Much work has been done over the years to address transit, and we have some great transit advocates on the council today. Eliazar will continue work with his colleagues to ensure the areas where transit can be improved for those who need it most.
